How to Clean Your AC Condenser Coils

6 min read

Clean condenser coils improve efficiency and prevent problems. Here's how to do it safely.

The outdoor condenser unit releases heat from your home. When the coils are dirty, this process becomes less efficient.

Why Cleaning Matters

Dirty coils: - Reduce cooling capacity - Increase energy consumption - Cause higher refrigerant pressure - Lead to compressor strain - Shorten system life

When to Clean

Check Monthly During Cooling Season Look at the coils through the grille. If you see buildup, it's time to clean.

After Storms or Yard Work Debris can quickly accumulate after wind storms or landscaping activities.

What You'll Need

  • Garden hose with spray nozzle
  • Coil cleaner (optional but helpful)
  • Work gloves
  • Soft brush (optional)

Step-by-Step Cleaning

1. Turn Off Power Switch off the AC at the thermostat AND the disconnect box near the outdoor unit.

2. Remove Debris Clear leaves, grass clippings, and other debris from around and on top of the unit.

3. Rinse from Inside Out If possible, remove the top or fan shroud. Spray water from inside the unit outward to push debris out of the fins.

4. Use Coil Cleaner for Heavy Buildup Apply according to product directions. Let it work, then rinse thoroughly.

5. Rinse from Outside Gently spray the exterior of the coils from various angles.

6. Let It Dry Wait at least 30 minutes before restoring power.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't use a pressure washer—it can damage fins
  • Don't bend fins (use a fin comb if needed)
  • Don't skip turning off power
  • Don't use harsh chemicals

When to Call a Professional

If coils are severely fouled, or if you're uncomfortable with the process, professional cleaning ensures thorough results without risk of damage.
