Thermostat Won't Reach Set Temperature: Causes and Fixes

6 min read

Setting your thermostat lower doesn't always mean the house will reach that temperature. Here are the real reasons your HVAC struggles to hit the target.

You want 72 degrees. Your thermostat is set to 72 degrees. But your house sits stubbornly at 76. What's going on?

Understanding the Problem

First, understand that HVAC systems aren't infinitely powerful. They're sized to maintain comfortable temperatures under typical conditions, with some reserve capacity for extreme days. But there are limits.

Common Causes

Extreme Weather On the hottest Bay Area days (and yes, we get them inland), even a properly sized system may struggle. Most systems are designed for conditions that occur 97.5% of the time, not the 2.5% extreme days.

Undersized Equipment If your system has always struggled, it may be undersized for your home. This is especially common when: - Room additions were built without upgrading HVAC - Windows or insulation were changed - The original installation was incorrectly sized

Thermostat Location If your thermostat is in a particularly warm or cool spot, it may not accurately represent the rest of the house. Near windows, in direct sunlight, or close to heat sources can all cause problems.

Ductwork Issues Leaky ducts can lose 20-30% of conditioned air before it reaches your rooms. Poorly designed duct systems may deliver too much air to some rooms and not enough to others.

Dirty System A system covered in dirt works harder and produces less. Dirty filters, coils, and fans all reduce efficiency.

Refrigerant Issues Low refrigerant means reduced cooling capacity. This requires professional diagnosis and repair.

What You Can Do

1. Change your air filter 2. Make sure vents are open and unobstructed 3. Close blinds on sun-facing windows during peak heat 4. Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris

If these don't help, professional evaluation is needed to determine if the issue is system capacity, ductwork, refrigerant, or something else.
