When to Replace Your HVAC System: Age, Repairs, and Efficiency
The repair-or-replace decision isn't always clear. Here's how to evaluate whether your HVAC system is worth fixing or if it's time for new equipment.
At some point, continuing to repair an old system doesn't make financial sense. But determining that point requires looking at several factors.
Age Guidelines
**Air Conditioners:** 15-20 years average lifespan. After 15 years, start thinking about replacement.
**Furnaces:** 15-25 years depending on maintenance and quality. Heat exchangers can crack in older units—a safety issue.
**Heat Pumps:** 10-15 years due to year-round use and more complex operation.
But age alone doesn't determine when to replace.
The 50% Rule
A common guideline: If repair costs exceed 50% of the value of a new system, consider replacement. This is especially true if your system is past mid-life.
Signs It's Time
Rising Energy Bills If your bills keep climbing despite similar usage, efficiency is declining.
Frequent Repairs One repair is normal. Needing repairs every season suggests systemic failure.
Uneven Comfort If rooms are too hot or cold and adjustments don't help, the system may be losing capacity.
R-22 Refrigerant If your AC uses R-22 (Freon), it's obsolete. R-22 is no longer manufactured, making repairs increasingly expensive.
Humidity Problems Older systems often can't control humidity as well as modern equipment.
Strange Operation New noises, smells, or behaviors indicate wear.
When to Repair
- System is under 10 years old
- First-time repair
- Problem is minor (capacitor, contactor, fan motor)
- No other issues present
- Good maintenance history
Planning Ahead
Don't wait for a complete failure. If your system is 15+ years old, start researching replacement options. Emergency replacements cost more and limit your choices.
Consider: - Current energy efficiency ratings - Rebates and incentives available - Financing options - Sizing requirements
A planned replacement in spring or fall often costs less and gives you time to make a good decision.
